The ideal refrigerant for any application

Which refrigerant is useful for which refrigeration system? Every operating company has to confront this question, as the choice has a major influence on your machine’s performance. There is no universal solution; each refrigerant has specific properties that make it suitable for its respective area of application. In our portfolio you will always find the ideal refrigerant.

‘In general, it is not possible to use every refrigerant for every application. It is therefore advisable for operating companies to work with the experts at ENGIE Refrigeration. Our specialists have plenty of know-how and can explain which refrigerant has the perfect properties for the application in question.’

Jörn Stiegelmeier, head of technology and development

Our refrigerants at a glance

What are the advantages of R-1234ze?

  • R-1234ze is a refrigerant with low flammability and a very low GWP value.
  • It meets the stipulations of the F-gas Regulation and is therefore not affected by the phase-down scenario.
  • The safety requirements are low and easy to implement.
  • The refrigerant is future-proof and has long-term availability.
  • In the case of R-1234ze, no CO2 equivalents are allocated to the amount of refrigerant put on the market – which makes the refrigerant especially sustainable.

What are the applications of R-1234ze?

  • Whether in chillers or heat pumps, R-1234ze is suitable for use in both systems.
  • With its exceptional thermodynamic properties, the refrigerant is a sustainable alternative to R-134a.
  • All the models in our QUANTUM series can be operated with R-1234ze.

What are the advantages of R-515B?

  • The greenhouse potential of R-515B is 77 per cent lower than that of the refrigerant R-134a.
  • Its safety level is A1 as per EN 378-1. This means that R-515B is a non-flammable safety refrigerant.
  • With a GWP value of 293 (IPCC-AR4) and 299 (IPCC-AR5), R-515B meets the requirements of the F-gas Regulation – until at least 2030.
  • Because the refrigerant is classified as A1, no additional safety measures are needed for the machine room containing the chiller or heat pump.

What are the applications of R-515B?

  • All air-cooled and water-cooled models in the QUANTUM series are available with the refrigerant R-515B as an alternative to the previous standard refrigerant R-1234ze.
  • The refrigerant is suitable for any application requiring optimal refrigeration capacity as well as an eco-friendly and sustainable refrigerant.

What are the advantages of R-513A?

  • Its safety level is A1 as per EN 378. This means that R-513A is a non-flammable safety refrigerant.
  • Of all the refrigerants, R-513A involves the fewest safety requirements for you.
  • It meets the requirements of the F-gas Regulation.
  • The refrigerant has a low GWP value of 631.
  • Especially efficient in operation.

What are the applications of R-513A?

  •  All QUANTUM modelles - air-cooled, water-cooled and split models – can be operated with R-513A.
  • The refrigerant is highly efficient, which makes it interesting in particular to industries with high energy demand, such as the automotive industry and hospitals.

What are the advantages of R-134a?

  • R-134a – chemical designation tetrafluoroethane – has excellent thermodynamic properties. They make the refrigerant particularly efficient.
  • The refrigerant is non-flammable and non-toxic and assigned to safety class A1 as per ISO/ASHRAE.

What are the applications of R-134a?

  • We offer our air- and water-cooled QUANTUM chillers with R-134a.
  • R-134a is the preferred choice for industrial refrigeration supply, for the food industry (supermarkets) and for the hotel and restaurant industry.

What are the advantages of CO2?

  • CO2 is future-proof: the natural substance is not subject to any bans on use or restrictions and is very easily available.
  • Compared to other natural refrigerants, they cause lower costs for operating companies. There is no need for recovery and disposal.
  • R-744 is non-toxic, non-combustible and thermally stable.
  • It complies with the F-gas Regulation and is therefore not affected by the phase-down scenarios.
  • You face only minor safety requirements, as the refrigerant is assigned to safety class A1.
  • CO2 is climate neutral and environmentally friendly. It does not contribute to the greenhouse effect or the destruction of the ozone layer.

What are the applications of CO2?

  • R-744 is especially suitable for heat pump applications. It is the standard refrigerant for our thermeco2
  • From an energy perspective, CO2 is suitable for industrial and commercial refrigeration systems.

What are the advantages of ammonia?

  • Ammonia is sustainable, as it does not harm the ozone layer (ODP=0) or contribute to the greenhouse effect.
  • Furthermore, R-717 is easily available and inexpensive.
  • Compared to other refrigerants it has excellent thermodynamic properties.

What are the applications of ammonia?

  • Chillers operated with ammonia are the preferred choice in the fields of commerce and industry. This includes slaughterhouses, the chemicals industry, dairies, breweries and ice sports facilities.
  • R-717 is especially suitable for applications in the medium temperature ranges. That is why it is sometimes used in office buildings.
  • We at ENGIE Refrigeration use ammonia for our office buildings. Combined with our safe and reliable AMONUM chiller, it is the ideal refrigerant for our needs.
