Demand-based heating and cooling with energy from an ice storage system

The simultaneous cooling and heating system works efficiently and reliably thanks to innovative products from ENGIE Refrigeration – as impressively demonstrated by our SPECTRUM Water system at a leading global manufacturer of medical technology and pharmaceutical products. Two SPECTRUM Water machines are used to heat and cool the company's premises simultaneously. In winter, these act as heat pumps for the local heating network in the factory hall. Each SPECTRUM Water unit delivers 400 kilowatts of heat. The heat pump application draws the energy it needs from an ice storage tank. The fact that this requires a demanding temperature lift from the coolant to the heat transfer medium and low coolant temperatures of around -8 degrees Celsius is no problem for SPECTRUM Water.

Heating in winter, cooling in summer

As soon as the demand for cooling increases in summer, SPECTRUM Water uses the energy from the regeneration of the ice storage tank to generate cooling. In addition, the system can be switched to chiller mode, delivering a cooling capacity of 300 kilowatts. The transition between heating and cooling is straightforward and efficient: the system is hydraulically switched over to use brine to dissipate the condensation heat via dry coolers on the roof. At the same time, the brine circuit of the evaporator cools the cold water network for air conditioning via a system separation. And our machine does more than just heat and cool with energy from the ice storage tank. Our team at ENGIE Refrigeration also found a good solution for the limited space available in the freight lift: we shortened the length of the SPECTRUM Water machine by partially dismantling it, including the water chambers.
