More efficiency and more sustainability in refrigeration - QUANTUM Air from ENGIE Refrigeration exceeds Tier 2 of the Ecodesign Directive

The European Union has set itself a number of climate goals: one of these is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40 per cent from 1990 levels by 2030. In this context, it is especially important that the more energy-intensive industries such as refrigeration and climate control technology contribute towards an increase in energy efficiency and therefore to a reduction in carbon emissions. ENGIE Refrigeration GmbH from Lindau on Lake Constance, Germany, is aware of this task and is therefore contributing to greater sustainability, above all with its chillers from the QUANTUM Air series.

ENGIE Refrigeration launched the redesigned air-cooled QUANTUM Air series on the international market in June 2019. All 28 model variants in the series feature a superlative refrigeration capacity, a convenient control system, excellent serviceability and maximum efficiency. The last-mentioned aspect in particular was especially important to the refrigeration and heating specialist from Lindau on Lake Constance when it overhauled its time-tested QUANTUM series. Measures to increase energy efficiency play an important role in lowering carbon emissions and thereby contributing to the climate goals of the European Union, which must now be implemented for product groups relevant to energy consumption, for example, in the context of the Ecodesign Directive. ‘We at ENGIE Refrigeration are working actively and continuously to offer our customers highly efficient, powerful and sustainable solutions for refrigeration,’ says Jochen Hornung, CEO of ENGIE Refrigeration. ‘In this regard, we are setting a new standard on the worldwide market, especially with our new QUANTUM Air chillers.’

New standards in terms of energy efficiency
The air-cooled QUANTUM Air chillers from ENGIE Refrigeration are currently among the most high-quality and efficient chillers in the world. Thanks to their great energy efficiency, the greenhouse gas emissions of QUANTUM Air devices are so low that these machines already meet the future requirements of the Ecodesign Directive that will apply from 2021 (Tier 2). The air-cooled QUANTUM Air in version A1250 with a refrigeration capacity of 1,200 kilowatts is a good example for demonstrating the huge potential for savings that such chillers can deliver. This kind of module is often used for year-round server cooling, which corresponds to around 8,760 operating hours per year. Even during this type of usage cycle, the chiller consumes 410,000 kilowatt-hours less power than specified by the future Tier 2 reference value from the Ecodesign Directive. For the operating company, this yields annual power savings of around 78,000 euros per year as well as a reduction in carbon emissions of roughly 200 tons (at around 19 cents/kilowatt-hour and 0.475 kilograms CO2/kilowatt-hour). ‘We are proud to take on a pioneering role in terms of sustainability with our QUANTUM Air chillers,’ says Jochen Hornung. ‘We want to expand this advantage further in future, in line with the mission of the ENGIE Group: “Zero carbon transition as a service”. Because our most important strategic target is to help customers optimise their carbon budget with low-carbon technologies and services – as we already do today with our QUANTUM Air, for example.’
